Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee

The Queens Green Canopy initiative marks the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022.

In early April, Leamington Rotary Club members planted trees at 16 schools in the town to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

As part of the initiative, each of the 16 schools participating received an oak tree donated by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and a hawthorn or blackthorn tree – with 32 trees being planted in total.

The aim of the initiative is to create a legacy in honour of the Queen’s leadership of the country, and to benefit future generations.

As well as making Leamington and our schools greener while we commemorate the Queen, the project was also in support of a second initiative – the West Midlands Virtual Forest project, hoping to fulfil the UK’s target to become carbon net zero by the year 2050.

What We Did

We approached all schools in Leamington and offered to assist them in taking part in the initiative.

We sourced all the trees, some of which were donated by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust and a team of Rotarians helped the pupils to plant them in each school. We then pinned each school onto the  QGC Map, a digital record of the Jubilee tree planting projects across the United Kingdom.

Why We Did It

A huge part of Rotary’s focus is about serving the community in which we live.

This seemed like a great commemorative project to get involved in and for us to give back to schools in a way that enhances the environment. Schools were very keen to be involved as many have established, or are in the process of establishing, forest schools.
